Specifically, the objectives of this project are: 1) To study theoretically the effects of technical progress on an economy in the presence of firm heterogeneity. Goals / Objectives The overall objective of this project is to develop new theories of international trade and development in the presence of firm level heterogeneity. The recent industrialization trends in developing economies, as well as the recent development of the theory of heterogeneous firms, warrant a new look at this well-established theory of urban unemployment. While the literature on rural-urban migration and urban unemployment is decades old and goes back to the celebrated Harris and Todaro article in 1970, firm level homogeneity is a central assumption in the literature. Two of such intertwined issues are massive rural-urban migration and ensuing urban unemployment. The steady and increasing pace of industrialization of major developing economies such as China and India has brought major social and economic problems in the past few decades. Another set of the issues we will study in this project is unemployment and rural development both in the developed and developing countries. We will revisit results assuming, in contrast, that firms are heterogonous. The literature on the effects of technical progress on various sectors of an economy in the presence of firm homogeneity is rich. As one example of such issues that we will study is the effects technical progress may have in rural or urban regions of a country. ![]() Non Technical Summary This research proposal will be a five-year long project that will address numerous issues in international trade and development.
